Complications may crop up that cause an implant to become loose. If\nthat happens to you, what should you do? Let\u2019s talk about why an implant may\nfeel loose and how your dentist or oral surgeon may be able to address the\nproblem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Does the Implant Feel Loose?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are basically three reasons\nwhy a dental implant may feel loose:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The implant is not loose at all \u2014 but the\nrestoration is. <\/strong>In some cases, the crown, bridge, or denture on top of an\nimplant may incur damage that makes it feel loose. Teeth grinding, hard impacts\nto the face (such as those that might occur during sports), and normal wear and\ntear could all be culprits behind a loose restoration.<\/li><li><strong>Osseointegration failed.<\/strong> If an implant\nbecomes loose within the first year after it is placed, it is likely due to the\nbone failing to fuse with the implant. This may happen because of pre-existing\nhealth conditions, failure to comply with post-surgical instructions, or other\nfactors.<\/li><li><strong>Peri-implantitis. <\/strong>Peri-implantitis is an\ninfection that damages the tissue around a dental implant. In addition to a\nloose implant, you may also experience redness, swelling, and pain in the gums\naround it. Missteps in oral hygiene, tobacco use, and uncontrolled diabetes all\nincrease the risk of peri-implantitis.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Action Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as you notice that an\nimplant feels loose, contact your implant dentist. If you procrastinate about\ngetting treatment, you give the problem an opportunity to worsen. For example,\nan infection could spread beyond your mouth and cause systemic illness, or a\ndamaged restoration may end up breaking altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At your appointment, your dentist\nwill perform a visual examination, and they will likely use imaging equipment\nto get a look at what is happening beneath the gum line. Once they pinpoint the\ncause of the issue, they will recommend a treatment plan to get your oral\nhealth back on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a damaged restoration is the\nproblem, you may simply need a replacement. However, if failed osseointegration\nor peri-implantitis is causing the implant to feel loose, you\u2019ll require more\nextensive treatment. Depending on the severity of the issue, it might be\nnecessary to remove the implant altogether. Then, once any traces of infection\nare gone and your bone is healthy, it may be possible to replace the implant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does one of your dental implants\nfeel loose?
